Prominent Ear Surgery

Prominent Ear Surgery

Prominent ear problem, which can be defined as the cartilage part of the ears is farther from the head than it should be, and there is a wider angle between the head and cartilage than it should be, in the literature; It is the underdevelopment of the antihelix part (fold) in the auricle (auricle) and the overdevelopment of the conchal cartilage tissue.

In the meantime, let me tell you while it’s ready; The overdevelopment or lack of development of the structures I mentioned above is not related to the fact that you slept too much on your ear as a child. So, what I’m saying is that it is a futile effort to put a headband on babies so that their ears do not fold and become a scoop, it is a kind of urban legend. So, don’t blame yourself or your family.

Prominent Ear Surgery

Our appearance does not only affect our daily aesthetic concerns. At the same time, it also affects how we position ourselves in the environment we live in, our social relations, our fragile aspects about ourselves, our mood, our mental balance, in short, our psychology.

When it comes to an appearance that is outside the normal and ideal forms of society, we have to deal with many psychological mood disorders such as social anxiety, anxiety, anxiety disorder, lack of self-confidence, and isolation from social environments. There are many reasons why we feel this way that our appearance has such an impact on our psychology. The feeling of being disliked, peer bullying and more… While each of our feelings we bring from the past to the present shapes our present, the “anomaly” in our appearance affects us more emotionally.

The age limit for many surgical operations that promise visuality and change the appearance in a positive way is 18. Before the age of 18, the person’s body is still in a phase where it continues to develop in many areas, trauma, accident, etc. Unless a situation occurs, the person’s appearance is not interfered with. Today, although some clinics, which we can call under the stairs, unfortunately intervene in our young people aged 16 -17, procedures that reshape the general appearance of people in this age group, both legally and ethically, should not be performed.

However, there is an operation that is performed from the age of 5-6 today, let alone waiting for the age limit of 18. It is well done because, as I mentioned above, living with a certain deformity can cause a person to be harmed in many different ways, especially peer bullying.

Let’s come to our surgery, which can be done from a young age.

Prominent ear appearance is not basically a health problem. The wide angle of the cartilage relative to the head does not negatively affect the person physically, and does not create an auditory problem. However, this “anomaly” in appearance causes various traumas in children and adults, especially since it starts to show itself from a young age. Many people want to leave the prominent ear appearance behind because it has serious effects on people psychologically.

So, as a matter of fact, this operation is aimed at improving not only the appearance, but also the psychology.

While there is an age limit of 18 in many operations where the appearance is renewed, the age limit drops to 5-6 years when it comes to prominent ear surgery. This is because the development of the ears is mostly completed in the first few years of the person. All children over the age of 5 who do not have a medical disability to receive anesthesia and then adults are suitable candidates for this operation.

Prominent ear surgery, like almost every operation, is an application that needs a personalized protocol. In this procedure, an incision is often made behind the ear, so there is almost no trace of surgery after the procedure. However, rasping or removing the excess cartilage tissue in the ear and fixing the ear with stitches towards the back are the procedures used frequently.

Although it is a safe operation, prominent ear surgery requires a preparation process in itself. Our patients who want to have this operation, if they are using blood thinners, should stop taking blood thinners about 10 days before the operation.

If they are smoking, it is a good option to reduce and even quit smoking during this period in order not to slow down tissue healing.

Before the operation, I request some tests from my patients to find out whether they have a medical obstacle to getting anesthesia. If my patients are suitable for anesthesia as a result of these examinations, I perform the operation on the surgery day determined after the consultation examination.

Prominent ear surgery is a comfortable operation. There is no need to stay in the hospital after the operation. My patients can be discharged from the hospital on the same day. Although the operation is generally comfortable, it is an operation after all, and mild pain and ache after the operation is expected. These pains can be easily controlled with drugs taken orally. However, after the operation, my patients are required to wear a special hair band similar to tennis bands. This is important for the new shape of the ear to fit. Here, what I mean by the fit of the shape is not the ears getting used to their new shape, but minimizing the possible edema and swelling in the ear area after the operation. If the band is not put on, the ears will not regain their old prominent shape, but the first month after the operation is very painful for the patients as the edema will be high. Therefore, it is important to wear a hair band after the operation. This band is worn for about a month.

Prominent ear surgery can be easily performed for 4 seasons due to its nature, but the hair band that must be worn after the application may cause discomfort to some patients. For this reason, it is more convenient and comfortable to perform this surgery, especially in pediatric patients, during summer months, on holidays, and especially in children during the semester.
