Nasal Polyp Surgery

Nasal Polyp Surgery

As I mentioned above, there is a covering layer that we call the mucous membrane in the cavities in our body. In these covering layers, tissue sagging occurs from time to time due to various reasons. You can think of these tissue sags as grapes hanging from a vine. These hanging tissues are called polyps.

Nasal Polyp Surgery

Our body is a set of systems composed of interrelated structures in every sense. Maybe it will be very classic, but you can think of our body as a really well designed machine. Every part of it works where it should, as it should. These parts can be damaged from time to time due to different reasons, lose their function or cause a series of health problems by affecting each other.

Although each part of our body has its own characteristics, there are also similar situations in some parts. For example, the best example of this is air gaps. There are air spaces between the tissues in our body, and these spaces exist in many parts of our body. For example; mouth, nose, stomach, intestines, lungs…

These air spaces in our body are necessary for the flow to occur correctly and subsequently for the correct functioning of our organs. Of course, don’t mind when I say spaces, actually it would be more accurate to say range because these fields are not completely empty. In all of them, structures such as mucous membranes, etc., are in a way furnished. For example, let’s take the intranasal structures. There is a thin covering in the air spaces/gaps here, which we can call the mucous membrane. Changes in the mucosa greatly affect the function of the nose.

What is a nasal polyp?

Because we have air spaces in many different parts of our body, polyps can occur in many different parts of our body. They are named according to the region in which they occur. Nasal polyps are the name given to polyps that form in the nose. The word nasal is a Latin word in terms of etymological origin and has meanings related to the nose. For this reason, polyps occurring in this region are called nasal polyps.

Although there is no clear information about why nasal polyps occur, it is known that chronic sinusitis and rhinitis are effective in the formation of nasal polyps. In addition to sinusitis, asthma, viral infections, allergies and genetic predisposition are also effective in the formation of nasal polyps.

Nasal polyp problem is a condition that requires treatment. Nasal polyps do not go away on their own or shrink without treatment. There is definitely a need for treatment. Nasal polyps can cause many diseases and health problems. The first of these, of course, is nasal congestion. Nasal polyps often cause nasal congestion because they block the airway. However, in case of allergic conditions, they can cause a runny nose. The runny nose that cannot be thrown out due to congestion causes other health problems by flowing into the nasal passages over time.

One of the problems caused by nasal polyps is the restriction of the person’s sense of smell due to nasal congestion and negatively affecting nasal functions. Nasal polyps must be treated with the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Our patients suffering from nasal polyp problems usually apply to our clinic with symptoms of nasal congestion, headache, weakened sense of smell, snoring, sleep apnea and sensitivity in the throat area.

The diagnosis of nasal polyps can be easily diagnosed with a general clinical examination. After the physical examination, nasal endoscopy and sinus CT are frequently used methods for diagnosing nasal polyps.

There are two methods in the treatment of nasal polyps. One of them is drug treatment and the other is surgical method. In the treatment of nasal polyps, drug treatment is preferred first. Surgery is always the last option. Medication uses corticosteroids and antihistamines. The drug group to be chosen, the duration and form of use are determined according to the patient’s allergy and the condition of the nasal polyps.

Another option in the treatment of nasal polyps is nasal polyp surgery.

These are the operations that we aim to clean the nasal polyps and make the person healthy again. These surgeries are also known as endoscopic sinus surgery. Nasal polyp surgery can be completed in a very comfortable and reliable way thanks to the development of today’s medical technologies and its reflection on surgeries. Today, endoscopic method is preferred in nasal polyp surgery performed under general anesthesia. Thanks to the endoscopic method, the possible risks in the surgery are minimized, while the recovery period of the patients is shorter and they can return to social life faster.

As with almost every health problem, surgery is the last option for nasal polyp problems. In the nasal polyp problem, where drug therapy is applied in the first place, if our patient did not get the necessary efficiency from the drug treatment, if the drugs used were not sufficient, then nasal polyp surgery is applied

Nasal polyp surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a full-fledged hospital. In nasal polyp surgery, which is a comfortable operation in which the endoscopic method is used, the area where the polyps are located is entered and the polyps are cleaned with a device with a light and a special camera at the end. If any tumor etc. otherwise, only the polyps are removed in the surgery, and if it is a tumor, some healthy tissue is taken as well as the tumor and the operation is completed. The duration of the operation varies according to the procedure to be performed. In nasal polyp surgery, which is an operation that does not require hospitalization, the duration of the operation varies according to the scope of the operation.

Nasal polyp surgery is an operation that does not require hospitalization. Since no incision is made in the surgery, there are no scars or stitches. In the first few days following the operation, slight tingling, discharge and itching may occur in the nose. The cause of itching is often crusting for the nose. Moisturizing nasal sprays are used to relieve these crusts. Although moisturizers are generally needed for the first 1-2 weeks, there is no need to use a moisturizer as the crusting will decrease over time. The operation is safe, the recovery period is more comfortable than the surgeries performed with open techniques.
