What is nasal meat?

The adenoid, known as adenoid in the medical literature, is a tissue with an indented structure, which starts to grow in the 6th month during the development of the immune system in the nasal region where the nostrils are opened in common and continues to grow until the 6th age, and then disappears completely. It is completely normal for this tissue to form between these ages. However, while growing during these ages, it can sometimes grow excessively and cause nasal congestion, sleeping with an open mouth, snoring, recurrent and/or persistent otitis media in children.

The task of the adenoid, which is one of the defense tissues of the body, is to remove microorganisms that can harm the body from the body.

Many factors play a role in the growth of adenoid, especially genetic factors. However, the most common cause among these is adenoid enlargement caused by chronic upper respiratory tract infections. This problem is more common in children than adults.

Adenoid, which we can say to be one of the body’s defense mechanisms, can cause many health problems if it grows. It can cause problems such as hearing loss, otitis media, restless sleep, sinusitis, snoring and even respiratory arrest, and it also causes developmental delay, especially in children.

Although genital problems are usually seen in early-stage patients, adenoid enlargement can also be seen in some adults, and this growth can lead to various health problems and reduce the quality of life of the person.

It is not a problem if this tissue is large enough to not cause any respiratory and/or ear problems in the pediatric age (up to 16 years of age). It is insignificant as it is a tissue formed in the natural developmental period. However, the origin of the formations that may exist in the nasal region after this age is a condition that needs to be determined medically. Because the formations in the nasal cavity that may occur after this age may be of tumoral origin. In such cases, a biopsy should be taken from this tissue and treated according to the result.

Adenoid enlargement in adults, especially snoring and sleep apnea; It can cause runny nose, post-nasal drip, nasal congestion, sleeping with your mouth open because you can’t breathe through the nose, dry mouth and tooth decay, earache and ear fullness. If the adenoid problem is not treated, the person may have to deal with many health problems in his daily life.

In the presence of adenoid enlargement, first of all, the factors that may cause growth should be treated. Generally, in the presence of allergy and/or rhinosinusitis, the adenoid tissue that grows reactively can shrink with their treatment and may not cause any complaints. In the absence of these conditions or after treatment, we perform adenoid surgery under general anesthesia.

The purpose of adenoid surgery, which is an operation performed under general anesthesia in a full-fledged hospital; It is to contribute to the increase of the quality of life of the person by surgically removing the enlarged adenoid and to eliminate the problems caused by the adenoid enlargement.

Adenoid surgery is always the last option in the treatment of adenoid enlargement. Adenoid surgery, which we apply when there is no satisfactory result with drug treatment, is a comfortable operation. In patients with advanced adenoid growth and; Adenoid surgery is decided at the point where sleep apnea, chronic adenoid inflammation, breathing difficulties and even speech disorder occur.

In age groups where adenoid diseases are common, some parents demand that their children’s adenoids be taken in order to prevent possible discomfort. However, it should not be forgotten that the adenoid, as I mentioned above, acts as a protection for the upper respiratory tract. Therefore, adenoid surgery should be performed only if the adenoid is causing serious breathing difficulties or other health problems in the period of children’s most common diseases.

Adenoid surgery, or in other words adenoidectomy, is a very practical operation. The operation, which is performed under general anesthesia, is easily completed in an average of 20 – 25 minutes. In the operation, the mouth of the patient under general anesthesia is opened with a special tool. Then, the adenoid located behind the uvula is surgically removed and removed. There are no incisions and/or stitches in any part of the patient. After this surgery, which can often be performed on a daily basis, patients experience a rapid recovery and relief. The procedure is quite simple and comfortable. The short duration of the operation also reduces the risk of possible complications. The hallmark of a good adenoid surgery is that no pieces are left behind when the adenoid is removed.

Nasal surgery recovery process is at least as comfortable as the surgery itself. However, patients are kept under observation for the first few hours after the operation. During this time, food is given and movement is ensured. If there is no problem in eating and moving, our patients can easily be discharged from the hospital a few hours after the operation.

During the first 5-6 days after the operation, crowded environments should not be entered and rest should be given importance. Again, during this period, blood thinning drinks and foods such as herbal teas should not be consumed, and smoking should not be used.

Follow the operation, partial sore throat or runny nose may be seen in the first week, and bad breath may be complained of. These are expected states. These complaints go away on their own within a few days.

Frequently asked questions about adenoid surgery

1-Is there an age limit for adenoid surgery?

Under medically normal conditions, adenoids become smaller as the age increases. For this reason, adenoid disorders are mostly seen in childhood. Adenoid surgeries are operations that can be performed from the age of 6 months.

Under normal conditions, adenoids shrink with age, but this does not mean that there will be no adenoids in adulthood. In some patients, adenoid problems may be encountered in adulthood and treatment may be needed.

2-How long does it take to return to social life after adenoid surgery?

Adenoid surgeries are operations that do not require hospital stay, in which our patients can be discharged from the hospital on the same day. However, our patients need at least 1 week for the healing process after adenoid surgery. In the first few days following the surgery, the effects of the surgery and anesthesia continue to be seen. Final healing takes an average of 2 weeks. At the end of the first week, our patients can return to their social lives, schools and jobs, provided that they do not force themselves.

3- Does the adenoid grow back after adenoid surgery?

Adenoid surgeries are the last option for adenoid enlargement treatments. However, the adenoid may not grow back after the operation. In such a case, the treatment procedure is repeated and re-applied from the beginning. At this point, some patients may feel that the second treatment will not be effective because they are immune to the treatment. However, the drugs used in the treatment of adenoids are not drugs that develop tolerance.
