Acute ear infection

Acute Ear Infection

Our ears, which are one of the 5 senses of our body and perform the hearing function, are basically divided into three; outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. External ear; The outer ear, which plays an active role in reaching the eardrum, consists of the auricle and the outer ear canal. In the inner part of the ear canal is the eardrum, which separates the outer belt from the middle ear. Middle ear; When it comes to the ear structure, it consists of the anvil, hammer, stirrup bones and the eardrum, which you probably hear the most. The middle ear, as the name suggests, is located in the area between the inner ear and the outer ear. The middle ear, located behind the eardrum in this region, is an air-filled cavity. Inner ear; As the name suggests, it forms the innermost structure of the ear. Balance cells are found here, along with inner ear fluid and auditory nerve cells.

What is acute ear infection?

Although acute ear infections occur due to many reasons, they mostly occur due to bacterial or viral infections. There are different treatment options, including medication and surgery, for acute ear infections, which are more common in children than adults. The reason why acute ear infections are more common in children than adults can be explained by the fact that children’s Eustachian canal is shorter than adults, depending on the age group. Since this channel is short, many viruses are easily recognized from the throat to the middle ear through the mouth. Viruses deployed in the middle ear, on the other hand, reproduce here and cause swelling of the mucosa in the middle ear and eustachian. With the swelling of the mucosa, the ear structures cannot get enough air and the pressure in the ear is adversely affected. If the pressure in the ear is adversely affected, the eardrum will be pulled inwards and will lose its flexibility, resulting in a decrease in sound transmission. Acute ear infections can occur in one ear or in both ears at the same time.

We can list the possible causes of acute ear infections due to viral and bacterial causes as follows; • Multiplication of bacteria or viruses in the middle ear, • Fullness of the sinuses and related diseases, • Various upper respiratory tract infections, • Allergies, • Deformation of the Eustachian tube due to different reasons and failure to fulfill its function
Due to the flatter Eustachian tube in children, viruses and bacteria are more easily transported through the throat to the middle ear. However, since children’s immune systems can be more fragile than adults, the environments and places they are in make it easier to get viruses and bacteria. • Widespread exposure to adult cigarette smoke, • Being in crowded environments such as kindergartens and kindergartens, • Being in stuffy places at games and events, • Allergy-prone body, • Various upper tract infections, • The growing adenoid makes it easier for children to get viruses and bacteria that cause acute ear infections.
Ear infections caused by bacteria or viruses in the middle ear are usually serious health problems. symptoms of acute ear infections include; Ear pain due to the change in ear pressure, ear congestion due to the inability of the Eustachian tube to fully perform its function, discharge in the ear, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite are seen. In addition to these, some of our patients often mention hearing problems as a symptom in this period.
Another name for middle ear infection is otitis media. It is the infections that reach the middle ear and multiply here that cause inflammation. Inflammation that occurs in the inner and outer structures of the ear, especially in the middle ear, is called acute otitis media. In some cases, inflammation can be seen in the outer ear as well as in the middle ear. This situation is also evaluated under the title of acute ear infections.
Acute ear infections can be treated with medication or surgery. The identified findings, the patient’s response to drug therapy, are effective in the treatment process and procedure. Treatment of external ear inflammation; External otitis media is a much milder disease than otitis media in terms of symptoms, discomfort and affecting the life of the person. External ear infections can usually be treated with ear drops. After 3-4 days of starting to use the drops, there is a serious decrease in the complaints, and then the complaints completely disappear in about 10 days. Although it varies from patient to patient, painkillers can also be used rarely in these treatments. Middle ear infection treatment; Although otitis media is a more painful disease than outer ear inflammation, the recovery period is longer and more extensive. The effective treatment of otitis media is to clear the inflammation in the middle ear, and then to restore the eardrum and the pressure in the ear. Otitis media treatments are carried out with antibiotics and in-ear sprays in the first place. The purpose of the antibiotics and sprays used is not only to dry the inflammation, but also to help open the Eustachian tube. Reduction of the complaints in the first 48 hours after the drug supports, and then the swelling of the mucosa in the following days.
If an inflammation stays in the body for a long time, it can bring many complications. Untreated acute ear infections can increase the pressure on the eardrum and cause perforation of the eardrum. Perforation of the eardrum and damage to the inner structures of the ear can lead to permanent hearing damage.

Frequently asked questions about acute ear inflammation

1- Does acute ear infection cause deafness?

Otitis media is the name given to the infection and inflammation of the area behind the eardrum. If the inflammation in this area is cleaned with drugs or surgically, the inflammation begins to put pressure on the eardrum. Following the increased pressure, the eardrum perforates and causes permanent hearing loss in the person. Otitis media is a health problem that can be treated with safe and comfortable procedures. If it is treated correctly and after early diagnosis, there is no problem, but if it is not treated, hearing loss and deafness may occur

2- Is chewing gum good for acute ear infections

Chewing gum causes our jaw to move at regular and frequent intervals. Prolonged jaw movement helps relax the Eustachian tube. This also affects the discharge of ear infections.

3- Does acute ear infection go away without antibiotics?

Antibiotics play an important role in curing inflammation in our body. In the antibiotic treatments, which are also frequently used in acute ear infections, care should be taken to take the drugs at the same time on the same day. Although antibiotics are effective in acute ear infections, they are not required to be used in every ear infection treatment. It is healthier to decide after the examination whether to use antibiotics or not.
