Tonsil Surgery

Tonsil Surgery

I think it is the dream of many children to eat ice cream in the morning and evening. Especially at primary school age, when we say that children with tonsil surgery can eat ice cream all day, I think we become their favorite doctor at that moment. 🙂 I don’t know if there were any around you. From childhood to adulthood, you have heard from many people around you; throat inflammation, tonsil swelling and fever due to infection. In fact, not only have you heard from your surroundings, but you must have experienced this problem at least once in your life. This is the fact that the tonsils are infected, which is described as swollen throat among the people. Tonsils are small round structures located at the back of our throat. When these structures become infected and inflamed, they swell and negatively affect people’s swallowing and food intake. In some people, the inflammation of the tonsils may occur in occasional periods, but in some people it may become chronic due to various reasons. Since chronic tonsillitis brings with it other health problems, we usually perform tonsillectomy or tonsillectomy for people suffering from this problem.

What is tonsil surgery?

Tonsil surgery, or tonsillectomy, is an operation that takes an average of 1-1.5 hours. The purpose of tonsil surgery, which is a procedure performed under general anesthesia; Tonsillitis is to increase the quality of life of patients who have become chronic (if this problem is experienced more than five times a year, it can be called chronic) and therefore quality of life decreases. In tonsil surgery, the tonsils are surgically removed.

Tonsil surgery is the last option for us ENT surgeons, as in many branches of medicine. First of all, we apply medication to our patients with tonsillitis. If we do not get an effective result from drug treatment and our patients have chronic tonsillitis, then we resort to tonsillectomy.

Another reason for the need for tonsil surgery is tumors that may occur in the tonsils. In cases where we suspect malignant tumor tissue, we apply to tonsil surgery. We recommend tonsil surgery if the tonsils are caused by tumors or inflammation, as well as if people frequently experience tonsil swelling. When the tonsils become swollen, they can cause difficulty breathing and sleep apnea. For this reason, we recommend tonsil surgery in such cases, as swollen tonsils will negatively affect the quality of life of the person.

Tonsil surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia and can be completed in an average of 1.5 hours, is a comfortable operation, but requires a preparation process. We want our patients to share their medical history with us before the operation and during the consultation examination. Thus, we learn whether our patient has any allergies or if there is a situation where his body will react to the operation during the operation. In addition to sharing the medical history, we also request some examinations from our patients, since tonsil surgery is an operation performed under general anesthesia. Thus, we learn whether they have a medical condition that prevents anesthesia.

Although it is a comfortable and safe operation, since tonsil surgery is a surgical incision, our patients should stop using blood thinners and food supplements before the operation. Since we resort to tonsil surgery for obstructive sleep apnea as well as inflammation, we also want these patients to have polysomnography additionally.

Tonsil surgery is a painless, painless operation. During the operation performed under general anesthesia, our patients do not feel anything. Subsequently, the process is completed comfortably, as our patients consume especially cold and warm soft foods after the surgery. In some cases, there may be pain in the operation area after the operation, but this can be controlled with mild painkillers.

We have been performing tonsil operations in two different ways in recent years. The first of these is the classical surgical method, which has also been used in the past. The other is the Thermal Welding method. The Thermal Welding method is a method that allows the removal of the tonsils without bleeding and without stitches. In addition to the rapid healing it provides, it also minimizes the risk of possible complications due to the absence of stitches, bleeding and incisions.

Tonsil surgery is an operation that does not require hospitalization. After the procedure, our patients can be discharged after an average of 4-5 hours of observation.

On the first day after the operation, approximately 2-3 hours after the operation, our patients can eat meals such as fruit puree and warm soup.

The recovery period in tonsil surgery, where the recovery period is much shorter than in many surgeries, is an average of 2 weeks. At the end of 2 weeks, the signs of surgery disappear. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the diet in the first 10 days. It is important to consume cold and warm foods. We often recommend ice cream consumption during this period, especially in pediatric patients. Cold foods and drinks reduce the risk of possible bleeding. Although the recovery period is slightly faster in our pediatric patients, they can return to school in an average of 7 days. However, the first 10 days after the operation, sports activities and activities that force the body should be avoided.

Frequently asked questions about Tonsil Surgery

1- How long does it take to return to social life after tonsil surgery?

Our patients are discharged from the hospital a few hours after tonsil surgery. The first week after the operation is of great importance in both adults and pediatric patients. Although they can return to social life, they should not force themselves and pay attention to their nutrition. After the control at the end of 1 week, if there is no problem, our pediatric patients can return to school, and our adult patients can return to work.

2- Does the immune system decrease after tonsillectomy?

One of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to tonsil surgery is whether the immune system of the person will be damaged after tonsil surgery. Although there is a common belief that the tonsils hold the germs that enter the mouth and prevent the person from getting sick, and that if they are taken, the person will often get sick, but there is not exactly such a connection between the immune system and the tonsils. Although tonsils are necessary organs for our body, they are not indispensable organs of our body. If they often cause various diseases, it is always the right decision to take them. In addition, when it comes to body defense, the structures we call lymphoids already undertake this task.

3- What is the age limit for tonsil surgery?

Tonsil surgery, unlike many surgeries, does not have an age limit, but it is a surgery that is suitable for 3 years of age. At this point, the development of children and their care after the operation are taken into account when planning tonsillectomy operations. For detailed information and appointment about tonsil surgery, you can reach us from our clinic phone numbers or the contact form on our website; You can also make an appointment for a consultation examination by asking your questions about the surgery.
